The Walter & Jackson Story
In 1872, shortly after the Civil War ended, Brinton Franklin Walter took over a water-driven mill on what is now South Bridge Street in Christiana, Pennsylvania. Brinton offered custom grinding of feed to the young but growing town of Christiana. Later, as his business grew and diversified, he began to offer building materials, feed, coal, and fertilizer.
In 1936, during the Great Depression, Brinton’s two sons Robert and Charles Walter took over the company. Robert and Charles, along with a third partner, Brinton Jackson, incorporated Walter and Jackson, Inc. in the state of Pennsylvania. With hard work, honesty and integrity, the company began to grow and prosper. George Walter joined them after WWII, in which he served.
Our Christiana branch is our oldest and largest facility. It carries a complete line of lumber, millwork, windows, doors, hardware, and building materials. It also houses our corporate office which handles the administrative and financial functions as well as W&J’s drafting and estimating department.
Our Gap Yard, which is 1 mile North from the Christiana Branch, is home to our 26-acre concentration yard where bulk lumber, plywood, and engineered materials are kept.
In 1981, Robert’s son, Robert Walter II and George’s son, J. Michael Walter, took over the company as Robert and George stepped down.
W&J acquired our Quarryville store in 1985. It has a complete selection of lumber, hardware, windows, doors, and building materials. In addition, Quarryville carries a full line of masonry products including sand, gravel, flue liners, block, cement, and Glen-Gery brick. They also have a small kitchen and bath showroom and specialize in decking and railing products of various types.
Our Design Showroom in Christiana, which was established in 2005, features breath-taking kitchen and bath displays, custom millwork of all types, custom wood flooring, windows, doors and more.
In 2014, Robert Walter II and J. Michael Walter stepped down from day-to-day operations and Robert’s 2 sons, David and John Walter, took over.
Walter & Jackson is in its 4th generation of ownership by the Walter Family. Our team is very proud to be one of the last remaining family-owned and operated Lumberyards in the area. We look forward to many more generations of partnering with our loyal customers through hard work, honesty, and integrity.
